An unpublished stater from an uncertain mint
Lot 916
ASIA MINOR. Uncertain. 5th century BC. Stater (Silver, 22 mm, 10.17 g). Male head to left, wearing crested helmet. Rev. Rough incuse square. BMC -. Müseler -. Rosen -. SNG Copenhagen -. SNG von Aulock -. Apparently unpublished. Weakly struck from worn dies and with some scratches, otherwise, fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

This enigmatic coin likely comes from southern Asia Minor, though whether from Caria, Lycia or Cilicia is unclear. It shows a crude helmeted head on the obverse, perhaps a warrior or a local god, and was struck to a weight standard that is consistent with the 5th century coinage in these areas.
